Asciano: Safety Culture Change
INDUSTRY: LOGISTICS
Asciano was an Australian transport infrastructure company. It combined Pacific National's rail freight operations with Patrick's ports and stevedoring business.
The Challenge
Asciano was making progress on health and safety improvements, but leadership engagement and capability were not yet strong enough to support the cultural change required. The CEO and General Manager of HSE needed a trusted partner to help build leadership ownership and embed safer behaviours across the organisation.
The Solution
After a global search, Asciano engaged Interchange to design a bespoke culture-change program.
We worked with HSE, HR and the executive leadership team to identify the key leadership behaviours needed, improve their mindset to health and safety, and design an engaging change program to be rolled out to the rest of the organisation. This involved mobile learning centres built from shipping containers, narrative films, digital interactive content, and a two-day leadership workshop.
The multi-phased program was delivered to more than 4,000 workers, from the CEO to frontline leaders, across 45 sites in Australia and New Zealand.
The Results
The program helped shift leadership behaviour and strengthen safety culture acrossAsciano.
It contributed to a:
100% reduction in fatalities for 3 years after the completion of the program
12% increase in employee engagement
41% increase in frontline employees reporting their leader as a positive safety role model
a 77% reduction in injuries
